The Natural Habitat of a Fanboy?

Well, it's been over a year since we've moved to our new place, and I'm still working on getting all my toys out of boxes, organized and displayed in my new home office.

Joel has been taking things off the shelves, and the cats have been knocking things off the shelves, so it's two steps forward, one step back.   But I thought you might like to see the work in progress.

  1. Wait... didn't you post a previous picture of your writing/work space? If so, you've added a good amount of cool paraphernalia, John. I'm jealous ;-).

  2. Hi Le0pard13:

Yes, I did post a photo last year...but as you've noted, I've added a bunch of stuff since then, so I figured it was time for an update (especially at a quiet moment, before more toys come off the shelves!)

So I stole a moment, shut the door (though there's still a cat in one picture...) and took a photo while the gettin' was good...

    All my best,
    JKM

  4. That is awesome! I love fan boy room pictures. It's wonderful to see what people have acquired over the years.

    Love the photos John.

Now let's see, if I was rummaging through your goodies as a guest I would have to tell you that I would look longingly at that Space:1999 poster on the back wall. Very cool. Is that a Space:1999 Pinball game?

I love your Planet Of The Apes mugs.

Is that a Space:1999 Listen And Read vinyl record and book? If so, Neat!

Wow! A UFO lunchbox even! Boy. I'd be like a kid in a candy store, as you would be at my house. I'll have to post a few pics sometime for fun.

Did you pre-order your Six Million DVDs John? I couldn't resist.

I actually tried to meet Lee Majors yesterday, but just couldn't find the time. Believe it or not, with all of my fondness for fanboy fun, I did place my family priorities first and unfortunately hope to have another chance to meet him and Richard Anderson some other time. I'm a little bummed about it actually, but can't do it all in one day sometimes.

Thanks for sharing those wonderful pictures. Cheers, SFF

  5. Hi Sci-Fi Fanatic,

I love these fanboy rooms too...though with kids, they get dicey, as you know (not to mention cats, actually...).

You really looked closely and saw all the details, including the Space:1999 pinball machine, the Apes mug (the other one is a Buck Rogers mug...) and the UFO lunchbox. The Space:1999 poster was given to me by the artist at the 1999 Breakaway Convention in Los Angeles. I truly treasure the gift.

I took a photo of my Six Million Dollar Man toys just for you, knowing they'd catch your eye! :) (There's even Oscar Goldman's exploding briefcase there...).

Man, I am working up to pre-order that 6 Million Dollar Man DVD set. I just put up on Craigslist some old carpets and my old desk (all from my old house).

I need an influx of "play" cash, seriously...

And you know, you're a good family man...putting family responsibilities ahead of Lee Majors and Richard Anderson.

I would like to think I'd do the same thing if the positions were reversed.

But if Lindsay Wagner were there...

    best,
    John

  6. Hi J.D.,

The DVDs -- I'm ashamed to admit it -- are tucked in a box under my desk there (you can kind of see it in one of the photos)

I'm planning to use that closet in the photo to put up all my DVDs, but I'm keeping them close-by for screengrabs and such! I still need to organize them.

    best,
    JKM

  7. Boy, if Lindsay Wagner was there. I might have skipped a few items or worked later into the night to make that comic con. Dang. Wagner. That would be something too.

Your pictures are a treasure trove.

Good luck with that cash infusion. I understand completely. I find myself itching to get stuff up on ebay but having no time at all to list it. Ugh.

So does all of your cool stuff provide inspiration or distraction while you're writing, John?

    All the best,

    Grayson

  9. Grayson,

That is an incredible and insightful question, my friend.

You know, being completely honest --- when it gets down to the nitty gritty -- I find all the cool stuff a distraction.

For my last several books, I've had to vacate myself from the office and work elsewhere as I neared my deadlines.

Otherwise, I simply couldn't focus. Not with those Dinky Eagles nearby...

    Isn't that terrible?

On a day to day basis, I can manage writing around that stuff just fine, but when the peddle is to the metal...well, I get out of Dodge!

    Best,
    John

Now this is a room you won't see on HGTV ;)
Very very cool room! Is that a POTA lunch box I see?????? Never, ever let me in your home, all POTA items may go MIA.

  11. Fantastic! Personally, however, I could never work in such a distracting environment. I need boring calm in which to write.
